Project Overview

Somali author Ruqia Abdi will read from her new book, "Better Parenting: A Guide for Somali Parents in the Diaspora." The book raises issues confronted by Somali parents raising children in the U.S. including: the education system, the lack of trust in social services, and the lack of a support system. The divide between the culture Somali parents grew up with and the culture in which they are raising their children can seem too big to cross. Abdi will lead a discussion about topics addressed in the book and offer insight based on her many years of expertise.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will leave with ideas about raising their children in American culture, while honoring their Somali culture, and integrating the two.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants enjoyed hearing from author Ruqia Abdi who read from her book and engaged the audience in discussion, as well as answered their questions. The high turnout and positive feedback signals that the cultural issues Abdi addresses in her book are of interest to our communities who appreciate having an outlet to discuss them.
