Brave Art - Teen Art Workshops
This is an interactive and informative art workshop related to SPPL's Read Brave Saint Paul citywide, inter-generational reading program. Led by local artist, Sarah Nelson of Inverted Arts, participants will work with canvas (wood board) and paint to create a work of art that symbolizes the concept of home. During the program, Sarah will provide dialogue prompts to engage youth in a conversation about housing and talk about the importance of art as a means to change systemic poverty and housing inequity. Works of art will then be displayed throughout the library system during Read Brave Saint Paul to engage the community in conversation through visual art exhibits.

Teens will be able to use art as a forum for dialogue about the Read Brave topic, housing. Youth will be excited to showcase their work in exhibits throughout the system as well as at a Meg Medina appearance. In addition to connecting to the Read Brave program, these workshops will also provide an opportunity for youth to work with high quality art materials and with instruction by a professional artist to supplement their learning. Overall, teens will participate in the Read Brave conversation through visual art and showcase their voice through an exhibit.
The participants enjoyed the workshop and had fun and were engaged with the presenter. They successfully created paintings that reflected what home means to them to coincide with the system-wide Read Brave event. Youth also were excited to share their work in a digital gallery as well as in a physical gallery during a Read Brave author event. Participants also learned some painting techniques such as perspective and mixing colors.
