Project Overview

Event 1, Children: Renowned local author Kao Kalia Yang will read her new picture book, A Map Into the World. Families with young children will be able to listen to the story and participate in a craft that will help them discover their own maps into their worlds.

Event 2, Adults: In a community event, Yang will present her new picture book, A Map Into the World. This lovely story is about a young child, helping her elderly neighbor find joy after the passing of his wife. It was inspired by people living in the East Side community of Saint Paul. Yang will speak to the audience, answer questions, and sign books, which will be available for sale. A community activity will be available after the discussion.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Children will enjoy Yang's reading of the story, learn more about the writing process, and participate in a craft that helps them explore themselves and those around them -- improving social skills and empathy. Adults will have the opportunity to meet a local author, ask questions, and learn more about our local communities and themselves.

Measurable Outcome(s)

This program ran during an unexpected weather event. That said, it still drew 55 people in total. Kao Kalia Yang is a beloved local author. Adults indicated that they enjoyed having a chance to ask questions and hear more about Yang's newest work -- a children's book. Children loved hearing Yang's book read aloud and participating in crafts that caused them to ponder their own neighborhood connections.
