Project Overview

Hooked on Books?and the Arts, too! is a community-wide celebration in support of literacy and the arts. The event has been an on-going partnership between Eastern Carver County Community Education and the Carver County Library system.

The event integrates literacy and the arts in an imaginative and innovative way. Memories are made for the participants, especially preschool through fifth grade students and their families. Heroes are made out of authors, illustrators, dancers, musicians, and artists, and inspiration takes place along the way.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Families will get exposure to different styles of art including watercolor painting, clay and mixed media, and will have the opportunity to learn new art techniques in creating their own one-of-a-kind artwork at the event through Artistry, Kathleen Rosales Pottery and more. Families will listen to music and see dancing from all over the world, including African drum music, folk music and ukulele ensembles by performers Siama, ten Penny Tunes and MN Opera. Additionally, children will have access to authors, will learn about many genres of books, and learn literary techniques for reading aloud to others including appreciation of literature, including creative expression with voices and inflection when reading different characters with Tails for Reading.

Measurable Outcome(s)

A county-wide celebration of literary and art was enjoyed by a diverse group of all ages. Families loved the variety as there was something for everyone. Author Kristin Tripathy was on-site as our headlining author and was present for book signing. Participants had the chance to make hands-on art with several mediums including paint and clay, heard music from African Congo to folk, had the chance to practice literacy skills, and so much more!
