Project Overview

The style comes originally from Trinidad and Tobago. Steel bands play on instruments that began as altered oil drums. Over the last 60+ years, the instruments have been refined and playing techniques offer a good deal of subtlety. The Tropics Steel band actually draws from Caribbean styles such as Calypso, Reggae, Ska, Soca, pop and others. The leader is Jahbee who has played many Caribbean styles for decades, including a stint with Shangoya, popular Reggae group from the Twin Cities. Chris is a young player of the pan who has traveled to Trinidad to learn the nuances of performing the music.
