Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Research is at the heart of National History Day: students will learn how to find good information and the importance of having reliable and accurate sources. These skills will help develop these students into informed citizens and life-long learners.

Measurable Outcome(s)

1,092 middle and high school students from over 75 schools participated in research open houses called Hullabaloos. 90% of students found a relevant resource or were able to take home a relevant resource from the event. Students have increased confidence in their research skills as a result of attending a Hullabaloo (97% increased confidence in doing historical research, 94% enhanced their understanding of a research database, and 92% increased their knowledge of a library catalog).

The second component is Research Field Trips, where undergraduate and graduate students work as library guides for History Day students, helping them find resources, answer research questions, and leading library orientations. There were over 196 library guides for the 1,763 students participating in Research Field Trips at 5 libraries. 92% of students found a relevant resource or were able to take home a relevant resource from the event. Students have increased confidence in their research skills as a result of attending a Research Field trip (95% increased confidence in doing historical research, 94% enhanced their understanding of a research database, and 95% increased their knowledge of a library catalog).

Teachers believe that Hullabaloos and Research Field Trips have substantial and positive impacts on students. 97% of teachers reported that students improved their analytical and interpretive skills. One teacher said, "The NHD project is a key cultural component for our students, and our annual trip to Wilson is a key part of that process."
