Project Overview

Loft First Pages are writing classes with topics including:poetry, introductions to creative writing, getting published, editing, memoirs, and more. Next Chapter Book Clubs allow people with developmental disabilities to participate in a book club. Groups of 8-12 participants meet with trained book club facilitators to read aloud (receiving as much support as needed) and discuss a book for 1 to 2 hours at a time. Westminster Town Hall forum features nationally acclaimed authors and speakers who give talks on diverse and pressing topics and are open to the public and broadcast live. For NaNoWriMo: Writing classes for adults. Topics include, using brain science to improve writing habits, creating tools to overcome writer's block, establishing writing habits.

For Loft First Pages: Attendees will learn new writing skills, attendees will be encouraged to continue their writing. For Next Chapter Book Club: Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a book club, will talk to their friends and family about book club, and will want to continue to come to book club. For Westminster Town Hall Forum: Attendees will experience a talk from a nationally acclaimed author. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with the author by asking questions or being able to meet them after the talk. For NaNoWriMo: Patrons will feel supported in their writing goals, patrons will learn about resources to help them achieve their writing goals, and will recognize the library as a space to write and grow as a writer.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Loft First Pages: 95% of patrons were encouraged to continue writing. 97% of patrons learned a new tool to improve writing skills or process. 62% rated the program as "excellent." Patron comments include: "Really good info for a beginner writer" and "Gave valuable tips and resources."

Next Chapter Book Club: Participants had the opportunity to participate in a book club and enjoyed talking with their friends about book club.

Westminster Town Hall Forum: Participants experienced a talk from a nationally acclaimed author, had the opportunity to interact with author and discuss questions.

NaNoWriMo: 100% patrons felt supported in writing goals. 86% of patrons plan to keep working on their novel. Patron comments include: "I loved the brain science that helped me understand what I'm doing and what is helping or hindering" and "Lots of information I had not heard before."
