Audience members will hear musical selections that were commonly played and popular with the ethnic groups that settled in the Ivanhoe area. They will also hear more traditional American folk songs that were popular with the early pioneers who came to the area in the late 1800s. The Rolling Family is a local group and the program will help to highlight and encourage the talent that can be found in the area. Anecdotal responses will be collected.
Kenneth Rolling spent time between each musical piece explaining the historical aspect of the song. His explanations helped the audience gain a greater understanding of the music and the importance that music played in the lives of the early settlers of the area. The group played a variety of instruments including the violin and banjo. Members of the audience often commented after the program how talented the younger members of the family were -- this shows that music plays an important role in the lives of the Rolling Family and that it can be an important part of any child's life.
