Project Overview

The library partnered with an Ag Science teacher, Amy Konradi, at the local school to host Dairy Day for children and families. The event was a part of the summer reading program in conjunction with dairy month. A cow and dairy themed storytime was led by Konradi and junior high Ag Science students.A Moo! Storywalk, cow scavenger hunt and milk and cookies storytime was presented. A demonstration of ice cream and butter making was given, and methods of cheese making taught. The children toured a local dairy facility later that day.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will gain knowledge of where the dairy products they consume come from and how they are produced. By making their own butter and ice cream, participants will forge a connection with Minnesota's agricultural heritage. The tour of the dairy farm will show the ways that farming and technologies have changed. The older kids participating in the program will demonstrate to the younger kids what future opportunities are available if they are interested in Ag Science. This event will also show that the library is a place to learn about new and interesting topics as well as get hands on experience. Anecdotal responses will becollected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Making the butter and ice cream involved at least ten minutes of shaking to get something that resembled butter or ice cream. Many parents and children commented on how tiring it was to make ice cream or butter this way without modern conveniences. They enjoyed the fruits of their labor, but were glad they did not have to go through this much work every time they wanted butter or ice cream. The junior high students enjoyed helping the younger kids and teaching them new skills. Those who went on the dairy tour thought it was interesting to see the whole process and the scale of the operation. They also expressed appreciation that this opportunity was available through the library.
