The Guitar's Story with Kevin Sherwin
Guitarist and composer Kevin Sherwin will regale the audience with the history of the guitar and how it ties into the German and Polish heritage of Minnesotans in general, and Pipestonians in particular. There will be two performances - one at the library and one in the music room, which is attached to the library through the school.
73 participated
Participants will gain a better understanding of how music is created. Community members can walk away with a sense of pride in their heritage in regard to their nation's contribution to music. After listening to a live performance, younger participants may walk away with a new appreciation of music and become more invested in learning to play an instrument. Participant evaluations and anecdotal responses will be collected.
Many participants commented on the evolution of guitar music and how they could hear the difference. Several of the older generation participants talked about their Polish and German heritage and how their families had played music as a way of bonding. The most exciting impact was on the younger generation who seemed to grasp the unspoken language of the guitar and the importance music has on them. Thanks to this grant we were able to bring a unique experience to youth and adults who never use the library. From the responses, the program was a tremendous success and accomplished all of the goals while helping individuals understand that the library can be a resource for more than just books.Comments included:"I learned about how the guitar has evolved to fit new needs over time." "Enhanced appreciation for the nuances of guitar music through the ages.""No matter how old music is, it's always going to impact someone."
