Project Overview

Kids will explore different ways to move hula hoops on and off their bodies while improving balance and rhythm simultaneously. Hooping combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing. Modern hooping has been influenced by art forms such as rhythmic gymnastics, hip-hop, freestyle dance, fire performance, twirling poi and other dance and movement forms. Hooping is part of the greater spectrum of flow arts, playful movement arts involving skill toys that are used to evoke the exploration of dynamic, flowing and sequential movements.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Through this program children and families will learn about hooping (also called hula hooping or hoop dance). In learning about hooping, they will be exposed to an art form that they are likely unaware of and will take the knowledge they gain and use it as a foundation to learn more about hoop dance. This program, due to its nature, will also fit in nicely with the Summer Reading program theme, "Read for the Win," which focuses on physical activity. It is hoped that this program will increase participants' awareness and interest in modern dance and fitness. Participant evaluations and anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Those in attendance enjoyed being able to participate in the activity as this was a very hands on program. It was fun to watch the kids learn how to do different things with their hula hoops. all in attendance enjoyed the program. The presenter was excellent and did a great job with the kids. This was just one more way that the community sees that the library is more than books.
