Project Overview

Patrons will be transported by charter bus to the Ordway Theatre to attend the production of West Side Story. There will be 168 tickets available and three buses, each originating from different locations throughout our library system. Each library will allow patrons to register to win tickets and transportation to the show. Each library was provided a new copy of the DVD of West Side Story as well as a soundtrack CD from the Broadway production of the show for their library collection.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

There will be great response to the offer of tickets and bus ride to the theater for this event. It is expected that those attending will gain a greater appreciation for the performing arts as well as the exceptional Broadway production that has been regarded as one of the best ever written. Anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

This was a phenomenal program that allowed the library system to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to the Ordway Theater to see West Side Story. During the month prior to the bus trip, each library allowed its patrons to register to win tickets for the trip. By promoting this system wide, it created a great deal of excitement and publicity for the libraries. Three buses were taken and riders were picked up at 4 locations per bus, with a volunteer host at each station. Things went perfectly the day of the event with only a couple minor issues that were taken care of handily. We were delighted by the responses that came from numerous attendees.

Comments included:
"So many great songs in that show - I think I hummed all the way home. It was a great day and I do appreciate your generosity."
"Thank you so much for the tickets and transportation to West Side Story. It was a well organized and enjoyable day."
"I was one of the lucky winners of a trip to see West Side Story at the Ordway on April 8. I had a wonderful time and want to thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for all you've done to support the Lamberton library."

Source of Additional Funds

PCLS libraries will help to promote, register patrons and distribute tickets. In addition, they will be providing individuals to act as assistants in helping patrons to board buses and with any other concerns along the way.
