Project Overview
Barb Nelson taught an intergenerational art camp at the Ivanhoe Public Library. The first day she shared with the participants how to express rhythm through their art. She had the participants look for art works that showed repeated patterns and then using acrylic paints had them paint pictures that show rhythm. the second day the participants focused on painting a still life featuring guitars and violins. She instructed them to paint one or more of the instruments in the still life however they were also instructed to incorporate artistic rhythm into their art work.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will come away with a knowledge of how to use mediums such as acrylics, chalks and tempera on canvas and art paper. Participants will gain an appreciation of art, learn new skills in the process and gain a greater understanding of both generations. We hope all participants will see art as a lifelong interest either by creating their own art works or by appreciating the art created by other's including well-known artists.
Participant evaluation/surveys and anecdotal responses were collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants came away with the knowledge that art does have rhythm--not in the musical sense that we are all family with but in repeated patterns and colors that are found in many different art forms. While we focused mainly in acrylic, participants learned the basics of drawing and putting their creativity on paper. The intergenerational aspect was fun. All ages enjoyed working and creating together. The adults were very supportive of the younger students and encouraged them to be creative. The younger participants came away with the knowledge that art is fun for all ages and that you are never too old to learn something new.
