Project Overview
This project will expand the reach of the library’s early literacy programs and school readiness to Somali families, parents, child care providers and the broader Somali community in Hennepin County. We will kick off the project with a community event that will highlight literacy in Somali traditions and culture. Somali media will cover the event. There will be eight culturally-appropriate and educational workshops in eight selected Hennepin County libraries. Participating libraries will be chosen based on 2010 Census demographics. The educator presenting the workshops is skilled in working with groups of parents in transition and in offering them strategies to maintain home language and culture while parenting in a new culture.
