Project Overview
Three events at North Regional and Sumner Library. At North Regional on June 23 at 2pm, a viewing of “Slavery and the Making of the America: The Challenge of Freedom,” followed by a discussion moderated by storyteller Vusumuzi Zulu and history professor Mahmoud El-Kati. At Sumner on June 22 at 10:30am, actor T. Mychael Rambo presents, “Juneteenth: The Sound of Freedom,” a program that blends music, poetry and storytelling to share the richness of African American culture and the wealth of American history. Also at Sumner on June 21 at 6pm, “The Feel of Freedom!” featuring Twin Cities blues pianist Cornbread Harris and singer Cheryl Wilson exploring through music what Texas slaves felt when they heard that slavery had been abolished two years prior to their own release from slavery.

Evaluation results: 97% of patrons learned about African American History. 100% think the library is a welcoming space. 82% have or plan to check out related library materials. 100% rated the quality of the program as good or better. Selected comments: "Enjoyed it so much! Hope to attend more. My first time to this library will come again." "Best time with my kids all summer. Talent was the best. A wonderful way to present our history to our children." "I liked how it felt like a community." "I was very glad that I came. I realize that I can never stop learning."
