Project Overview
Launched by the Givens Foundation for African American Literature in fall 2010, Givens Black Books is a community reading campaign with the goal of increasing access to and engagement in the literary arts in the Twin Cities African American community. In 2012, Givens Black Books will feature the work of acclaimed author Walter Mosley. HCL will host 5 events with storyteller Nothando Zulu. Legacy funding allows HCL to become a partner on this project.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Attendees were asked to complete evaluations and 73 did so. A majority indicated that the program increased their interest in and enthusiasm for reading, in particular African American authors. All respondents indicated that the program offered quality discussion on a range of topics with many different points of view represented and expressed. There was a general enthusiasm for connections made within the groups and greater understanding of the fiction and non-fiction texts. Selected comments, "It got me back to taking some time to stop and read." "It was great hearing stories from other people about experiences related to the book." Survey was distributed and collected by the Givens Foundation.
