Project Overview

Kids will explore different ways to move hula hoops on and off their bodies while improving balance and rhythm simultaneously. Hooping combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing. Modern hooping has been influenced by art forms such as rhythmic gymnastics, hip-hop, freestyle dance, fire performance, twirling poi and other dance and movement forms. Hooping is part of the greater spectrum of flow arts, playful movement arts involving skill toys that are used to evoke the exploration of dynamic, flowing and sequential movements.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Through this program children and families will learn about hooping (also called hula hooping or hoop dance). In learning about hooping, they will be exposed to an art form that they are likely unaware of and will take the knowledge they gain and use it as a foundation to learn more about hoop dance. This program, due to its nature, will also fit in nicely with the Summer Reading program theme, "Read for the Win," which focuses on physical activity. It is hoped that this program will increase participants' awareness and interest in modern dance and fitness. Participant evaluations and anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The children who attended greatly enjoyed learning more about hula hoops, including how the performers makes her own. The presenter not only showed the participants some hula hoop moves but encouraged them to make up their own as well. She really wowed them at the end with a performance that showed what hoop dance can look like with a lot of practice.

Source of Additional Funds

City of Tracy provided space for the program at no charge - $50.00.
