Project Overview
Minnesota author Joel Karsten presented a program on straw bale gardening, based on his book, "Straw Bale Gardens: The Breakthrough Method for Growing Vegetables Anywhere, Earlier and with No Weeding." Straw Bale Gardening is a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is the straw bale itself and is held together with two or three strings. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decay the straw becomes 'conditioned' compost that creates an extraordinary plant rooting environment. This gardening technique works well anywhere in the country or the world for that matter.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

People who attend this program will learn how to do prepare and maintain a straw bale garden. As this type of a garden is one that can be done in a large or small space, it will be something that many people can do regardless of where they make their home. Being in a rural area, most of the supplies needed for this kind of gardening are readily available to our patrons, so we hope to see more straw bale gardens around this coming summer!

Measurable Outcome(s)

The people who attended both of these events had very positive responses to the presentations that Joel Karsten made. Many of them were surprised at how easy the process of straw bale gardening can be and felt that coming to the presentation made them confident that they would be able to make their own straw bale garden. In fact, in driving around the area, it looks as though that straw bale gardens are starting to pop up at several homes and farms. Many people indicated that they would like to attend more programs similar to the program that Joel put together as well.
