Chautauqua Series: The Thirty-Ninth Man
Participants will learn the facts, as well as the human elements, involved in the cause of the Dakota War of 1862, the destruction of a way of life, and the results of this major conflict. Participants will gain a greater appreciation of Dakota history in Minnesota prior to statehood. Participants will begin to grasp the different experiences and points of view of two cultures, Native Dakota and immigrant settlers, during this tumultuous time.
Participants shared that they learned a great deal about the Dakota War of 1862, including many facts not included in the history books. Some participants realized that the history books they studied didn't always impart fair and balanced accounts. Participants thought this was a great program in regard to a more thorough and truthful interpretation.
