Project Overview
Marty Bergland, Master Gardener Emeritus, shares information on creating a heritage garden, including heirloom seed saving, preserving your family garden history, and antique food processing, recipes, and equipment. Together with the Hutchinson librarian, she will create an annotated bibliography on ethnic and historic garden books, as well as plants, shrubs, and trees imported to North America via various immigrant groups.

Participants will learn how to create a heritage garden, preserve garden seeds for future generations, and process garden produce as their ancestors did. They will gain knowledge of what plants were imported with various immigrant ethnic groups. They will become aware of resources about plant history and ethnic gardening. Participants will gain a new appreciation and interest in creating a garden genealogy for future generations.
Measurable Outcome(s)
Participants learned about: seed saving, including definition of cross-pollination; which plants are native, which were brought in by immigrant groups and when; how to create a heritage garden and document a garden history; connecting gardens to ancestors; additional resource lists on the above topics and more.
