Project Overview

The Bug Show is a unique, hands-on program that allows children to use all their senses to learn about the mysterious world of bugs (insects and their relatives). Children get to examine close-up, perhaps even handle, an assortment of live arthropods (hand-sized cecropia moths, mouse-sized hissing cockroaches, pencil-sized millipedes, and hand-sized tarantulas. Children will also see unique, weird & wacky exotic preserved insects from around the world and learn about the (sometimes comical) defenses they employ to survive. Larvets, a special bug snack is available.

Children will learn the value of having insects in the environment. Children will also go away with a new appreciation for insects.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The children got to hold hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes, tarantulas, and scorpions. The adults liked to watch the kids play with the bugs. The presentation was very informative for everyone.

Source of Additional Funds

Atwater City donated the use of the Atwater Community Center. Atwater City advertised the show on the town bill board. The Willmar, Benson and Atwater Public Libraries shared the same date and saved money on travel expenses.
