Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Attendees will learn about these historic Minnesota petroglyphs, Dakota games, how to throw a spear, and make animal tracks out of plaster. This activity will fit into the libraries Summer Reading Program theme of Dig Into Reading.

Measurable Outcome(s)

All attendees were able to see up-close what petroglyphs were. They were told the stories of what they meant and why they were done. Participants were able to make plaster molds of different prairie animal tracks and learn about their pelts and habitats. They learned about native American ways of moving (travois), children's games, and throwing a spear at a buffalo. They also viewed a ledge where buffalo rubbed when their backs would itch. The rock looked like granite, all polished up & smooth.

Source of Additional Funds

The libraries supplied water for the children. Parents supplied sack lunches. Minnesota Historical Society provided guides and leaders for activities as well as materials on the Petroglyphs.
