My Life in Nam - Royal Hettling
Royal Hettling and his brothers were in the 483rd Security Police Squadron's K-9 unit in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam, 1970-71. He wrote the book, 'Ten: Five Five' which chronicles the stories of a Midwestern boy and fellow dog handlers in the Vietnam War. Ten: five Five is the radio code for canine alert indicating the presence of a threat.

The program will provide an opportunity to understand the effects of the Vietnam war on individuals, their families and the changes it brought in the recruitment of soldiers for the United States military. The program will also provide historical information about the military use of dogs in combat, bomb, weapon and drug detection. Anecdotal responses will be collected.
The author answered questions about Vietnam and the K-9 unit for an hour following his presentation . The average age of the audience was 60-75 and this was 'their war,' a comment that was heard several times. Royal Hettling asked for a show of hands of those who had a relative or friend who had gone to Vietnam and everyone raised their hand, indicating that this presentation was of great import to all who had attended.
