Project Overview
Dick Kimmel & Co., a five-piece bluegrass band, will entertain people of all ages with a concert in German Park in New Ulm. This is part of the summer Monday Night Concerts in the Park series coordinated by New Ulm Park and Recreation, and it would be the first time the library has sponsored a program. On the following night at the library, Dick Kimmel and Jerilyn Kjellberg will present "A History of Bluegrass Music," a workshop that Mr. Kimmel has presented for more than 30 years throughout the U.S. and Europe. It covers the history of traditional country music, how it developed into what we call bluegrass and old-time stringband music, and some of the musicians who were influential in this genre (Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, and more). Included in the workshop will be demonstrations of the instruments used to play bluegrass as well as audio drawn from actual recordings. Dick Kimmel is a 2008 inductee into America's Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame and a 2010 inductee into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.
