Project Overview
Minneapolis resident Charlie Maguire is a musician who composes and performs songs in the American folk tradition. He presented a 45-minute family musical program that featured many original, environmentally themed, and Minnesota-based songs. From 1995-2003, Maguire officially became "The Singing Ranger" of the National Park Service; in 1991, he was appointed the official “Centennial Troubadour” for Minnesota state parks. This program was scheduled as a family program for people of all ages. In addition, the River Ranger Program scheduled its monthly meeting at this time. The River Ranger Program is a group of New Ulm area children and families whose focus is on learning about and developing an appreciation for the environment. Over the winter months during the past two years, New Ulm Public Library has partnered with the group to schedule educational and entertaining programs at the library.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

It was expected that a majority of respondents would learn at least one new song, express excitement about American folk music, express interest in checking out library materials about the outdoors, Minnesota environment, and/or folk music.

Measurable Outcome(s)

52 people attended. The audience was made up of a mix of concertgoers. Thirteen out of 25 adults were attending their first concert at the New Ulm Public Library. The survey results show that a majority of patrons enjoyed the program and the majority learned something about American folk music. All attendees surveyed noted that they learned at least one new song during the concert. In addition, more than half of the concertgoers expressed interest in checking out CDs from the library featuring Charlie Maguire and other folk musicians. More than half of those surveyed also commented they would be interested in checking out library materials about the outdoors and/or Minnesota’s environment. All patrons answering the program’s survey did agree that they would tell family and friends about the New Ulm Public Library and its programs.
