Project Overview
Site supervisor, Pam Jensen, and her assistant Shelley Olson created and presented two programs sharing information about archaeology. One program designed for children 4-8 years of age explained what an archaeologist did and how they do their job. The children then "excavated" in tubs looking for bones, and used those bones to recreate the animal -- a buffalo. The second program for ages 9-12 was of similar subject matter, but in more detail. The children had an opportunity to do a simulated excavation site that the presenters had created in our parking lot. They went through three layers of earth uncovering artifacts from eacy layer, marking, mapping and sifting and labeling each item as archaeologists do.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The children will learn about archaeology and how to excavate using the trade's tools. They will be exposed to a career that many have never heard of.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The children were very involved in this program. Parents, grandparents and caregivers were pleased with the program as well. Everyone learned the detail involved in digging up the past. We may have created a future archaeologist. One young man took his job very seriously. He gently scooped the sand until he found a bone. Then he traded his digging tool in for a brush to brush the bone off. Finally after he totally uncovered the bone he gently removed it to the tarp and proceeded to dust it off with a finer brush. This program was very interactive for all the children. Our books on dinosaurs, bones and things underground have almost all been checked out. 48 people attended.
