Project Overview
This first annual St. Peter Book Festival hosted 20+ regional authors at reserved tables which allowed them to connect with readers in the area as well as with other authors. Two panels of regional authors were held: writers in the Young Adult genre were Geoff Herbach, Kirstin Cronn-Mills and Rebecca Fjelland Davis; and writers in the adult genre were Connie Claire Szarke, Barbara Fister and Roger McKnight. Regional publishers were also invited, with three participating. Attendees signed forms when arrived, which entered them in to drawings for many books which were supplied by several publishers. Once an evaluation form was returned, another slip was filled out which entered them into a drawing for one of two grand prizes: 1) a $25 gift certificate to the Book Mark, or 2) a certificate entitling a group of up to ten persons to be guided by Bob Douglas, author of A Field Guide to Southern Minnesota Waterfalls.
Project Details
Saturday, April 28, 2012, 1:00 — 5:00 p.m.at the St. Peter Community Center in two rooms: St. Peter Room, and the Senior Center. This first event focused on readers of adult books, i.e. Children's authors were intentionally not included this time. / About 80% of the nearly 125 attendees were new to this event — persons who had not attended previous St. Peter Reads events. About half were from the larger region (not from St. Peter) — so this truly felt like a regional event.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Anecdotal responses and evaluations forms will be collected. By observation and tallying authors' sales of their books, assessment can be surmised about readers being challenged to "risk" reading a book by a lesser known author. Evaluations and informal surveying will measure if there is an increased awareness of authors from this region.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Anecdotal responses were collected throughout the afternoon which were overwhelmingly positive for the event. Evaluation forms were given to all attendees and also author participants. Attendees responded yes to the event meeting their expectations, and two felt it exceeded expectations. All the authors answered yes to the event meeting their expectations. Written comments contained some suggestions along with kudos: "love this kind of event," well organized, helpful staff, good to showcase local authors, coffee & cookies would be nice next time, more events for children's book authors would be fantastic. The authors' comments included: "keep it coming," thanks for having it, like being in one area and that only one event at a time took place, author panels quite enjoyable. And this supportive comment: "You produced a good show. It will take a few years to grow — it's worth the work. Good work!" Most authors handled their own book sales and let us know that they did have successes. The bookstore had a variety of books for sale, but primarily those by authors published in the traditional way. We were satisfied with the number of attendees for a first event of this magnitude. Panel presentations, especially during the Q&A was lively, interesting and informative. The number and quality of interactions between the audience and authors exceeded our expectations.
