Project Overview
Sonny Bryant, an entertainer and recording artist living in Mankato, provided an introduction to African Rhythms, African drum identification, as well as how the drums are made. He instructed twelve people on how to play the African drums, including children, young adults, and elderly. Mr. Bryant provided twelve drums for guests to play. This event took place in the multi-purpose room at the Saint Peter Community Center. Guests were required to rsvp for a place in the event. People were welcome to attend and not participate in the drum lessons, only those interested in the lessons were required to rsvp.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants engaged in a hands-on learning experience through playing the African drums and gained insight into native African music and culture and the influence Africa music has had on contemporary music. This hour and a half workshop introduced the participants to a new way to learn about culture and music with a professional entertainer and instructor.

Measurable Outcome(s)

12 people attended. Participants engaged in a humorous, enlightening, and influential African drumming workshop. By the end of the workshop the entire group, including a seven-year-old, a nine-year-old, three retired women, and seven young adults, were playing rhythms on the African Drums in unison. Each participant left the event with a new knowledge of the symbolism of each drum, insight into how Africans learn to hear and play music, and how to engage in a music session, with little to no experience, as if they were a professional.
