Project Overview
Artist Del Iron Cloud unveiled his mural, which was commissioned by New Ulm Public Library in honor of the library’s 75th anniversary. Iron Cloud spoke about his background and his work, particularly related to this painting, which depicts a scene of Dakota life in the New Ulm area before settlement. His 45-minute presentation was part of an open house that included music and reminiscing.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written evaluations will be distributed to attendees. A majority of the attendees will learn something about the artist’s creative process; gain a greater understanding of unique cultural perspectives and interpretations; indicate they will return to the library to enjoy this new artwork.

Measurable Outcome(s)

We anticipated: Attendance of up to 150 for the open house, which will include Del Iron Cloud’s presentation. 125 attended the open house. -- About half of attendees will indicate they previously had not attended a library program. About 27 percent of those who completed an evaluation indicated this was the first library program they had attended. -- About 10 percent of attendees will indicate this is their first time visiting New Ulm Public Library. About 10 percent of those who completed an evaluation indicated this was their first visit. / Observations: observed attendees discussing the painting with artist Del Iron Cloud after the presentation (see New Ulm Journal photo included in this packet). Attendees commented that they thought the painting was beautiful and a treasure for the library. They also praised the artist’s presentation. In fact, he has been invited back to speak at Turner Hall during the 150th anniversary of the U.S.-Dakota War commemorative events planned in August 2012.
