Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Through this program, children will hear the story of a couple immigrating to America from Sweden. It is a story that is familiar for many families in this area, who have similar stories in their own backgrounds. They will learn about this interesting aspect of history through music. This program offers the opportunity to see and hear music played on a variety of different musical instruments, and fits in nicely with the Summer Reading Program theme, which is "Reading Takes You Everywhere." Participant evaluations and anecdotal response will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

We were surprised that this program drew more adults than children. Several who attended said that it appealed to them because of their own Swedish ancestry. It is rare to find a program that appeals to so many different ages of people, and "Strings Across the Ocean" exceeded our expectations by far in that area. In addition to finding this program entertaining, those who attended reported that they learned some Swedish words and songs. They also learned about several different instruments that they had never heard before. Several remarked that they were grateful for the opportunity to hear this music live in Southwest Minnesota.
