My Mother the Astronaut - Traveling Lantern Company
All Traveling Lantern shows are interactive theatre performances that involve the audience directly in the story and are geared for K-6th grades aged children and their families. Shows last 45-50 minutes with Q&A. "My Mother the Astronaut" summary: Aquarius' mom is an astronaut and today is "Take your child to work day". Aquarius can't wait to go to NASA and find out what it's like to be in space! They visit Mission Control where she meets scientists and engineers who show her what they do and she learns all about space travel. Her imagination blasts off and she dreams of incredible journeys through the cosmos!

Children will learn about space travel, that women can be astronauts and hold important jobs, and what role scientists and engineers play in space travel. This will broaden children's imagination and give them ideas for future careers in the space field. After viewing this performance children will read books about space travel, planets and astronauts. Children will learn about NASA and what accomplishments they have made. Anecdotal responses will be collected.
Children learned about the placement of planets in the solar system. Children participated on stage during the performance. Children used their imagination to pretend to go into outer space. Children saw a mother/daughter relationship develop into a positive, strong choice for life. Watching this theatre performance instilled an interest in learning more and reading library books about space.
