Project Overview

The Slayton Public Library and the Fulda Memorial Library are partnering for a "One County, One Book" community program. We have chosen the book "Dark Side of the Loon". This is an anthology of short stories written by Minnesota authors. We will order multiple copies of this book to hand out to patrons of Murray County beginning in early September. The books will be read during the months of September and October. Then on October 20 we will host a panel discussion with authors from this book that are members of Twin cities Sisters in Crime. We will have a meet & greet time with book sales, book signing and refreshments. There will be additional programming during the months of September and October that go along with the Minnesota history theme.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The One County, One Book program takes the idea of a localized book discussion group and expands it to cover an entire county. This program will expand patrons reading preferences by introducing them to a new type of book - an anthology of short mystery stories based on actual events from Minnesota history. This program will build community through reading and discussing the same book title and sharing events that support the book. By reading an anthology of Minnesota authors, patrons will be exposed to new authors to read and enjoy. Patrons will gain an appreciation for historical events from Minnesota history. Participant evaluations and anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Patrons learned what an anthology book is and how the book is put together. Patrons learned from the author panel discussion how authors use critique in their personal writing work, how book characters are developed, and how the authors chose the historical event to write about. Having a large number of Murray County residents read the same book developed a sense of interest and community and sharing. Reading this anthology exposed patrons to new authors to read that they normally would not know.
