Puppetry and ventriloquism are a form of theatre. Puppet performances were included in the Federal Theatre Project in Minnesota during the 1930's as part of the CWA which funded cultural work-relief programs. In the 1950's Howdy Doody was a popular show for children using puppetry and ventriloquism. Today, children are captivated by the puppets on Sesame Street. The puppet program will provide the opportunity for children to see a professional puppet performance which many children have not experienced. Participant evaluations and anecdotal responses will be collected.
Lisa Laird presented an excellent "Libraries Rock!" program using puppets, ventriloquism, and her special brand of musical and theatrical talents. She had the children's attention from the start and had them engaged the whole hour. They loved when she transformed one of the librarians into an instant rock star! Lisa taught them songs and chants and she taught them how to play bells and follow musical directions using a color-coded method. After the program, Lisa had lots of musical instruments available for the children to play and experiment with which they really enjoyed. Lisa taught them that music is in everyone. She definitely succeeded in inspiring a love of music in every child through her interactive program. Here are a few comments from parents: "Learned how to turn household items into musical instruments for kids." "Lisa's talents are impressive and she had good rapport with the kids."
