Project Overview

Chad Lewis's program will feature over 100 bizarre newspaper stories from Minnesota that have not been seen in over 100 years. His program will give participants a glimpse back to the early days of the state when it was filled with strange deaths, ghosts, sea serpents, peculiar people, medical anomalies, oddities, psychic phenomena, and UFOs, giving participants a look at odd historical events that helped shaped our state.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will learn of the unusual events or weird facts that are part of our state's history. Participants will see the important role newspapers have played in society, notably their role in the telling, and later archiving these historic events. Participants will view the library as a place where the community can gather, and enjoy wonderful programs--a great value in small towns that lack community organizations to fund this type of programming. Anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Through the use of old newspaper accounts Chad discussed unusual events that happened in our states history--for example we learned that their might be a sea monster in Lake Pepin, and that throughout our state's history there have been several sightings of udos. We saw firsthand had how newspaper accounts have changed throughout the history of our state--in the early years of the newspapers outlandish headlines were the norm, how much of that would be considered slander. Participants enjoyed the afternoon spent with Chad Lewis, and see the library as a place that not only provides books and items for checkout, but also as a place that provides community enrichment.
