Project Overview

Tweens and teens use rocks to create pictures, plaques and sculptures. Rock painting is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression known to man. The varied surfaces, shapes, size of rocks and imagination make them perfect for rock art creations. This event includes tweens and teens from all areas of the county with transportation provided by the Lakefield and Heron Lake branch libraries.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Students will use their imaginations to create a piece of art by bringing pebbles/rocks to life with personality and style. Historical and cultural benefit of rock art is a rather vague term denoting prehistoric man-made markings on natural stone. Similar terms include: rock carvings, rock engravings, rock inscriptions, rock drawings and rock paintings. Anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Each student used their imaginations to create their own artwork using pebbles and rocks. It was interesting to see the various perspectives, ideas and styles come alive in the artwork. "I love coming to the art center - it's always fun!", "I'm going home to find more rocks so my sister can make an art project too."
