Strings Across the Ocean - Ross Sutter & Anders and Maria Larsson
Ross Sutter is joined by Anders and Maria Larsson in a lively U.S./Sweden collaboration that tells the story of a couple emigrating from Sweden to America. The show features a wide variety of musical instruments, including string bass, accordion, limberjack, guitar, drum set, fiddle, nyckelharpa, recorder, and lots of singing! This program will be a part of our summer reading program and ties-in with the theme of Reading Takes You Everywhere. The program also relates the cultural heritage of our community, as many people in the region have ancestors who immigrated from Sweden or other Scandinavian countries.

Attendees will be exposed to instruments and music that relate to our region's cultural heritage and that they may not otherwise be able to experience. People whose ancestors emigrated from another country to Minnesota will be able to see how their families' stories relate or differ from the immigration story told in this program. People will see the library as a place where they can experience lively, entertaining, and educational programming. Anecdotal responses will be collected.
An adult attendee commented that she didn't know the program was geared at children and came because she has Swedish heritage. She said that she still learned about an immigration experience similar to her ancestors and enjoyed the lively music. After the program, attendees were able to try out some of the instruments and a traditional puppet toy and ask the performers questions about their craft. A mother with three young kids thanked us for bringing interactive cultural programs like this one to the library because it wasn't available to her family elsewhere.
