Chip Carving - Joe Hauger
Joe Hauger has been woodcarving since he was a teenager and has taught numerous woodcarving classes. He will give class members an introduction to the art of chip carving. No previous experience is required. Chip carving involves taking small chips out of a flat piece of wood to make geometric or free form designs. This 2 1/2 hour class will cover basic chip carving cuts that participants will use to make a two-sided wood coaster. All supplies are provided.

Those who attend will have learned a new artistic skill and will be able to share it with others. Participant evaluations will be collected.
Those who attended learned about the tools and supplies needed for this type of wood carving. The instructor also spent time explaining best methods for sharpening the knives as well as how to transfer a pattern to a square of wood you intend to carve. The students worked on a two-sided square of wood--a geometric pattern on one side and a more curved free-form pattern on the other. Each used slightly different methods and the instructor spent much of the class time helping those who attended individually with their techniques and questions. Judging by the evaluations, the class participants enjoyed learning how to do something they'd never tried before and got to take their supplies home.
