Project Overview

The Arlington Brass is a group that has been playing together for 15+ years. They've traveled around the Midwest to play in communities. The Arlington Brass played music arranged especially for them and shared stories about how they came to be and some of their favorite experiences. Stories included how one band member, a retired Army musician, rode his motorcycle from Virginia to play. A former band director, who is 80+ and has macular degeneration, also plays in the group and talked about how his eyesight hasn't stopped him yet.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Attendees to this program will experience an enthusiastic group of musicians and lively brass music. None of the players are professional musicians, which will showcase that music can be made and enjoyed by anyone at any age or skill level. This program is meant to encourage individuals to keep playing music for life, or to encourage them to start back up again. Anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The program brought in 38 adults, all of whom had smiles on their faces throughout the program. I heard many people comment on how fun the event was and how great the brass sounded. Responses from the surveys included: "I'm encouraged again - you do not have to let age or even a disability (macular degeneration) deter you from doing what you enjoy - like playing in a band or driving your cycle across the country!", "I found out how much I love brass instruments.", "Music skills span the ages!""Magnificent. Thank you so much. I love the library."
