Project Overview

Junk Funk gatherings are energetic, inclusive and joyous opportunities where everyone can get their jam on. Using found objects and resourced materials: plastic buckets, garbage barrels, tin cans and anything else you can shake, rattle and roll. Participants learn hip hop grooves, traditional African rhythms and other funky beats.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Kids will gain knowledge about drumming the different kinds of drumming (African, Native American, hip-hop etc.) They will also participate in creating those sounds themselves with recycled materials brought by the Junk Funk group. Participants will gain an appreciation for a different form of artistic expression. Perhaps some of them will enjoy it so much they will go out for a percussion instrument in the band. Culturally we will be covering a variety of drumming genres and therefore teaching kids about those cultures. Anecdotal responses will be collected.

Measurable Outcome(s)

We had LOTS of extra people stop by to listen to the kids drumming. Several mentioned the soothing sound of all of them playing together. When they first started they were not together at all. Everyone was just banging on the buckets. By the end they were all playing together and creating a great sound. A couple parents commented that the song they used for teaching some rhythms was stuck in their heads all day. We are going to have a different drumming group come in so the kids can see how they are different.
