Diane Wilson and Marcie Rendon, Author Talk
Diane Wilson grew up in Minneapolis in the 1950s and realized in her thirties that she knew nothing about her mother's side of the family. Spirit Car is a book which tells of her search to find the history of her Dakota roots. Marcie R. Rendon is an enrolled member of the White Earth Anishinabe Nation. She is a mother, grandmother, writer, and performance artist. A recipient of the Loft's Inroads Writers of Color Award for Native Americans, she studied under Anishinabe author Jim Northrup. Her first children's book is Pow Wow Summer (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2014). Murder on the Red River is her debut novel. These women will share their stories of their Native American roots, growing up and honoring those roots, and writing about their experiences and the experiences of other Native Americans.

Patrons will learn about overcoming obstacles and learning to succeed against odds. Patrons will learn some Native American history. Patrons will learn some tips about searching for his/her own history and family ties. Patrons will learn about the individual authors and their writing styles, writing techniques, writing schedules, and how they came up with the idea to write their books/stories. Anecdotal responses will be collected.
Attendees enjoyed hearing from the authors about the process of researching family history and the manner in which they write. Both authors shared their stories of their Native American roots, growing up and honoring those roots, and writing about their experiences and the experiences of other Native Americans.
