Project Overview

Laura MacKenzie performs and teaches on an array of wind-powered instruments, including wooden flutes, whistles, various pipes, concertina, gemshorn, and voice. Laura has several shows available: The Magic of Celtic Music - Learn how air is transformed into music on the various wind-powered instruments, and what makes the airs, dance tunes and songs "Celtic." Music of the Lowlands of Scotland - Traditional songs, border dance tunes and airs are presented on Scottish Smallpipes, Border Pipes, Flutes, Whistles, Concertina and Voice. A Piping Hot Buffet - An informative presentation on a variety of bellows-blown and mouth-blown bagpipes: Scottish Smallpipes, Border Half-Long Bagpipes, Medieval Greatpipes, Leicester Smallpipes, Border Pipes and French Cornemuse.

To increase access to and enhance audience comfort and confidence with unfamiliar music styles. To encourage further education and attendance at future music and/or arts events. To increase access to educational and family-friendly music. To reinforce the idea that libraries are places to experience cultural or arts programming.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Laura let the students touch and try instruments from the Celtic tradition and they were fascinated. One man said it made him happy to see his own heritage in music represented. Many wanted to learn how to play the Concertina and Bagpipes and others would like to learn more about Scottish & Celtic music.
