Project Overview
Writing instructor Emily Urness taught a six-week class on creative writing. The first class was held on February 20, 2015 and the last class was held on March 27, 2015. The class explored different genres of writing, including poetry, fiction and memoir. At each class, Emily provided a handout of the topic of the week, along with examples from published writings. The class introduced various skill sets that related to writing, including character, plot, setting and dialogue. These building blocks are important in all genres of writing. A class reading and class book celebration was held on July 30, 2015.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will learn new skill sets in writing techniques through writing exercises.
Participants will building community through shared interests and participation in the class. Participants will contribute to the local history of our area through the collection of writing that will be produced in book form. Outcomes will be measured in a written survey given out to class participants and also during the public reading to community members in the audience. At the book release party, the audience will have time to connect with their family members, listen to creative writing, and be inspired to write themselves. An outcome of the previous memoir writing class has been a writing group of five participants in the class that has been meeting monthly. This is a possible outcome of this upcoming class.

Measurable Outcome(s)

All participants expressed enthusiasm and appreciation for the course. Participants said that they learned a great deal from the class, and the class helped some members get back into their writing. Class members asked if there would be future classes. A small group of participants began a writing group.
Class writings were compiled in a book, Collected Writings; Creative Craft Course, Northfield Public Library, June 2015.
