Project Overview
Winona Area residents read "Soldier's Heart" by Gary Paulsen in April 2015. Free books were placed at the following businesses: Kwik Trip (on Broadway and Mankato), Acoustic Cafe, Blooming Grounds Coffee Shop, Timbers Restaurant, Winona Area YMCA, and the Winona Senior Friendship Center. On the books was a sticker asking patrons to read it, pass it on, and join in the conversation. Bookmarks with the events were also placed on the books. City council members also received a copy of the book. Three events were held in conjunction with the book: 1) the Minnesota History Center's History Players presented Charley Goddard; 2) a movie showing of Gettysburg (1993); and 3) a book talk from the Hiawatha Valley Civil War Round Table.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Children, teenagers, and adults will have a deeper appreciation for Winona, MN and how the community was part of the Civil War. They will also learn what it was like for one of their own to participate in the war. The audience will be asked to fill out a paper survey that will allow for an analysis of what they have learned. The questions will include one rating question of 1-5 to find out how well they enjoyed the program. It will also ask how the audience heard about the program, what they learned from the program, and what they agreed most about the program. The final questions will ask if they will attend this program again if offered.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Seventy-two books were purchased for distribution around Winona, MN. Forty-two of the forty-four books distributed to various locations were taken by area residents. Eight of the books were given to City Council. Twenty of the books were used to create two book club kits to be used by area book groups.

Each of the seven Minnesota History Center shows at the Winona Middle School had 28 students. Programs were fairly well attended with nine people attending the evening presentation done by the History Players; the Gettysburg movie had a total of 18 over a two part movie event; and the book talk a had twelve people in attendance.
