Project Overview
The program supported the art of storytelling through the use of puppets. Puppet Farm Arts was contracted as an artist-in-residence to work with the elementary students at Medford Elementary School. Fifth grade (approximately 70 students) served as the "core group" of students who worked with the artist daily while the other elementary grades (approximately 430 students) benefited from a presentation about the art of puppetry as well as learned about creating a puppet during their regularly scheduled art time. Each 5th grade student made their own HERO puppet (to incorporate our character building theme) and created a play with their puppet. The 5th graders performed their plays for the younger classes and we had an all school assembly during which the 5th grade students presented their puppets. Christopher Lutter (artist-in-residence) did a presentation. After the program was completed, the finished puppets were displayed at the Owatonna Public Library.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)
Students will create an original work of visual art (puppet). This program will provide an arts enrichment opportunity and expose students and the community to the art of puppetry. Students will practice written communication and creative writing skills. Students will showcase their learning through the vehicle of performance (puppet show).
Measurable Outcome(s)
Each 5th grade student completed their own puppet (70 students). Each class had an additional 60 minutes of art enrichment for the entire week. All students created and presented their original creative plays that the grammar teacher included within the week. The students presented their plays to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes.
