Project Overview
Poetic Strokesis a regional poetry contest as well as a printed anthology that provides an artistic outlet for local poets and demonstrates the rich literary heritage of libraries and poetry in southeastern Minnesota. Poets, 16 years and older, may submit an original unpublished piece to be considered for publication in an annual, regional anthology. The poets must live in one of the 11-southeastern counties, Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, or Winona. A panel of three poetry judges judged all of the 334 poems in a double-blind process. The 30 poems written by 30 regional poets from 13 different communities in nine of the 11 SELCO counties were then published in the 2012 Poetic Strokes anthology. To celebrate the publication of the 2012 Poetic Strokes anthology and National Poetry Month, SELCO hosted the Poets at the Library tour in April 2012. Five Minnesota poets presented at five different locations, Austin, Owatonna, Rochester, Stewartville, and Wabasha.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

For the poets, the proposed outcomes will include better writing skills and confidence gained by writing and having pieces in publication. SELCO will survey a random selection of the poets selected for publication in the 2012 anthology requesting information about changes in their writing patterns and descriptions of any additional publications. For the readers and/or attendees at poetry readings during National Poetry Month in April 2012, the proposed outcomes will be measured via a survey to determine if the new anthology or the poetry program increased familiarity with local poets and/or created a personal desire to undertake creative writing. The patron survey will also ask about the potential of attending future poetry workshops or submitting their own poetry for publication.

Measurable Outcome(s)

SELCO staff surveyed all participating poets. 89% stated the Poetic Strokes contest met their expectations and increased their interest in writing poetry. 96% said they were more likely to submit to Poetic Strokes and/or other writing contests in the future. 89%, were more likely to read local poets and poetry in general, and 100% were more likely to connect with other local poets. 96% rated the Poetic Strokes experience Good or Excellent. Comments from the poets include: "This book of poetry is first-rate! It could be entered in the Minnesota Book Award contest." "It is a lovely format – and it makes me happy to have my work in area libraries. The blind judging competition is accessible and fair." Based on patron surveys, 100% thought the Poetic Strokes anthology enhanced their knowledge and understanding of local poets, increased their interest in reading and writing poetry, and made them likely to attend future poetry workshops and/or readings at the library. 1,500 posters and other public announcements, inviting poets to submit their work, were distributed region-wide. 202 poets submitted a total of 202 poems for judging from 34 different communities, representing all 11 SELCO counties. 30 poems by 30 poets were selected by the judging panel for publication in the 2012 Poetic Strokes anthology. 1,200 copies of the Poetic Strokes anthology were ordered, printed, and distributed to SELCO member libraries, contributing poets, and legislative members. 334 patrons attended the 2012 Poets at the Library tour.
