Project Overview
Bonner Elementary School (K-3rd grade) and Central Intermediate School (4th and 5th grade) hosted a project that would enliven two libraries with murals incorporating the same conceptual theme. The idea was to brighten up and draw the students into the library environment. The murals promote reading and increase the students' interest in reading and the library environment. Prior to the addition of the murals, the libraries were both very sterile and neutral. Student life at the intermediate school is short-lived as they only attend that building for two short years. The library staff tries very hard to make the two libraries operate in the same manner as much as possible in an effort to reduce student stress. The district was able to convert all school libraries to the SELCO system, thus helping to build a comfort level for student usage of the materials. The goal was to create a common reading encouragement theme that starts in the Bonner building and matures in the Central building, just as the students themselves move from building to building. The murals will go a long way to reduce stress and continue to build student interest in reading.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Teach basic artistic concepts. Instruct children on how collaborative art functions. Create a more aesthetically satisfying environment to foster transition between school buildings.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The Stewartville Star published several stories and photos of the murals as work continued. A Rochester Post-Bulletin reporter attended the Open House and published a story. The Olmsted County Journal also covered the project.
The students commented on the similarities between the murals. Some site specific comments from Central Intermediate School were: “Secret Code above door is very cool,” “Amazing how he does the stuff he does,” and “Welcoming; no more boring, blank walls.” “The murals add a life of learning to the library and a welcoming environment. The kids were excited to see some of their favorite characters included,” and “We had fun watching him paint.”
