Project Overview
This program supported the art of storytelling through the use of puppets. Puppet Farm Arts worked as artist-in-residence with elementary students at Medford Elementary School. Fifth grade (approximately 70 students) served as the “core group” of students who worked with the artist daily while the other elementary grades (approximately 430 students) benefitted from a presentation (a short 15-30 minute presentation for each grade) about the art of puppetry as well as learning about creating a puppet during their regularly scheduled art time. During the course of the residency, fifth graders worked with the artist-in-residence to create their own puppet. Also during this timeframe, the same fifth grade students, in small groups in their classrooms, wrote a story that correlates with their puppets. This story was translated into a puppet show that these small groups of students put on. Each show was videotaped and compiled into a video to show the entire elementary school.
