Project Overview
Bows, Bowlers & Bassoons brought the Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras (SEMYO; Rochester, MN) to the Rochester Public Library’s community room to provide an encore presentation of their silent movie themed concert. This encore performance was free and open to the public whereas the original SEMYO concert series required attendees to purchase tickets. There was a brief introduction about the silent film era by the Rochester International Film Group. The ensemble of 80 student musicians performed the original scores to accompany the showings of The Immigrant with Charlie Chaplin and Cops by Buster Keaton.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Audience members will learn about the genre of silent films as they have the opportunity to view two classic movies.
The audience will come away with knowledge and appreciation of this art form as well as the experience of hearing a live performance.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Highlights of what people learned from the program varied but included:
Everything in modern film is based on [silent films]; No minorities were depicted; Charlie Chaplin wrote and directed the films he made; Many silent film stars lost jobs after sound came to movies because they weren’t good talkers. Comments about the overall program included: “Thank you. It was excellent!” “Super good. Love the music by the orchestra,” and “Very funny. Good actors.”
