Project Overview
Kevin Strauss has been using stories to entertain, educate and inspire children and adults for more than a decade. He brought two programs to the SELCO Vetted program. Strauss presented two different programs. "MinneStories: 150 Years of Minnesota Stories and Storytelling" -- People have told stories around the campfire or fireplace since the start of our state. Hear stories told over the past 150 years by the Ojibwe, English, German, Finnish, Norwegian, Hispanic and Hmong people who have made the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" their home. "How Rabbit Lost His Tail: Animal How and Why Stories" -- Learn how bear got a short tail and why deer have antlers in this interactive story and nature program.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Emphasize the importance of folklore in your local community. Enhance the future storytelling performance experience for participants through education. Increase access to storytelling, enhancing audience comfort and confidence with unfamiliar folk tales. Encourage further education and attendance at cultural events. Reinforce the idea that libraries are places to experience cultural or arts programming.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Kevin performed 8 times in FY 2012, and the adult response consistently ranked the program very highly. They felt there was “good information/background on Minnesota history” and “The stories were very entertaining.” Students expressed interest in learning more about the native people in Minnesota. Many of children also stated they would like to go to a program like this in the future. Students commented, “I want to learn more about nature and wildlife,” and “I need to find out about legends, they’re cool.” Comments by teachers about the program included: “The stories went right along with a story we are reading in class, this was wonderful,” “Very good content, engaging,” and “Loved how he had all the props and acted out the roles.”
