Project Overview
The Zumbrota Public Library held a Community Reading Project from April 1-May 16, 2013. The book the community read was "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The events were: 1) Book Discussions held on May 2 & May 8 at the Zumbrota Public Library. These discussions followed the closure of the reading event on May 1. 2) A free showing of the 1974 version of the Great Gatsby on May 16 at the local art theatre. 3) A lecture titled "the importance of Fitzgerald's life in Minnesota to his development as a writer and as it connects to novel" to precede the movie on May 16. 4) A free showing of the new Great Gatsby movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio in Rochester at the Paragon Theater. This event was free to registered Zumbrota Library patrons who participated in the reading program, on a sign-up basis.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participants will have a better sense of community and use this as an opportunity to connect to others through book discussion and movie events
Participants will become more knowledgeable about a noted Minnesota author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, which fits with the intention of persevering arts & cultural heritage in Minnesota

Measurable Outcome(s)

In order to assess the expected outcomes of this project, the library chose to administer a survey to audiences who came to the two book discussions. There were a total of 36 respondents to the surveys.
Over 70% of participants had not read the book before, and although the book itself was not rated very highly, the discussions were popular and the likelihood to participate in the next community read was high.
Several of the comments on our surveys talked about how much they enjoyed the discussions surrounding the program.
Select responses to Survey Question, “What did you like best about this program?”
“It was a great community event for people to participate in that encourages reading”
“It was easy to participate”
“The discussion”
“It encouraged me to read a well-known book that I hadn’t read previously”
“I like the movie/speaker aspect. That always adds depth to a book”
“Being able to discuss the book with others”
“Being able to hear everyone’s opinions of the book”
“Listening to other views of people”
“Discussion helped me understand the book & see new views”
“Read a great book that I wouldn’t have otherwise read”
“It was well organized and published”
“Listening to other people’s ideas, comments, criticism, & praise for author & book”
“Everybody reads the same book; something to talk about”
